Feeling Worthy and Enough: A Journey to Shine From the Inside Out

Why your worthiness has nothing to do with your body, beauty or wardrobe, and everything to do with living on purpose

Welcome to Word N Style — (a segment of the Inspiring Your Shine Podcast) combining style and scripture to help women shine from the inside out. This isn’t just about looking good in your clothes; it’s about understanding that you are already worthy, already enough, exactly as you are right now.

For years, I struggled with feeling worthy. My body wasn’t “right.” My clothes weren’t expensive enough. I didn’t look as polished as the successful people around me. These lies kept me small, insecure, and disconnected from my true purpose.

This past year has been a journey of deep healing—working through trauma I didn’t even realize I was carrying. And through that healing, I’ve discovered something powerful: our worthiness isn’t something we earn through the perfect body, designer labels, or flawless appearance. It’s our birthright as God’s beloved children.

But here’s the beautiful truth: while our clothes don’t determine our worth, they can be a tool to help us show up more confidently as we walk in our purpose.

My Story: From Body Shame to Body Acceptance

At six years old, I sat next to my best friend Shelly and noticed our legs side by side. Mine were so much bigger—strong, muscular, solid. Hers were tiny and petite. In that moment, shame took root in my heart.

For decades, I carried that shame. I thought if my body looked better, I’d be more worthy. I’d be enough.

Then in my early twenties, I found myself surrounded by successful professionals making hundreds of thousands—even millions—of dollars. They wore designer clothes. They carried Louis Vuitton bags. Meanwhile, I was shopping at thrift stores and Ross, wearing what I now call “schlubby things.”

I coveted those designer pieces. I thought having them would make me more. That wearing nicer clothes would somehow add to my worth.

Now, holding my baby granddaughter (I call myself Grand Bee), I see the truth so clearly: She does nothing, yet she is valuable, precious, and amazing. That’s how God views all of us—exactly as we are, stripped of all the external trappings.

We’ve been lied to by consumerism. We’ve been lied to by the enemy. And we need to call these things out for what they are.

The Truth About Worthiness

Here’s what I’ve learned through my healing journey:

You are worthy simply because you exist. When you accept Christ as your Lord and Savior, you take on His perfection. Nothing you’ve ever done lessens your value. In fact, everything you’ve experienced—good and bad, even your mistakes—makes you more equipped to serve others with empathy and understanding.

But feeling worthy? That requires alignment.

You’ll truly feel worthy when you’re living on purpose—aligned with what God created you to do and be in this world.

When you’re outside of His will, struggling and striving in your own strength, that’s when worthiness feels elusive. But when you’re aligned and living on purpose, everything flows. You feel held. You experience the fruit of the Spirit regardless of your circumstances.

Style Tips: Creating a Wardrobe That Serves You

While your clothes don’t determine your worth, they can be a powerful tool for showing up confidently in your purpose. After years of styling others and working with a stylist myself, here’s what I’ve learned about creating a wardrobe that makes you feel good:

1. Less is More (Seriously!)

For most of my life, I prided myself on having so many clothes I never repeated outfits—even in high school. My closets were stuffed to the gills. But here’s the truth: we only wear about 20% of our closet. The other 80% is just clutter weighing us down.

My daughter Mallory experienced this transformation firsthand. When she moved out and took only what she truly loved, she told me: “Mom, I love my closet. I go to get dressed and I just love everything in there. It’s not cluttered and it makes me so happy.”

Action Step: The Complete Closet Purge

Empty your entire closet. Yes, everything—hanging clothes on your bed, drawer contents dumped out. You can do this in sections if needed, but completely remove items from their usual spots so your brain can process them differently.

As you go through each piece, ask:

  • Have I worn this in the past year?
  • How do I feel when I put it on?
  • Does this make me feel good?

Be honest. Get rid of what doesn’t serve you. Put those items in a bag, take them to your car immediately, and donate them. Don’t let them sit in a box where you’ll rediscover and bring them back in (I’ve done this too many times!).

2. Curate, Don’t Just Accumulate

Here’s what most people don’t teach after the purge: you need to curate your closet intentionally.

After removing what doesn’t serve you, take inventory:

  • What’s missing that would really complete my wardrobe?
  • Do I need good black shoes, boots, or heels?
  • Am I lacking quality white tops that could extend multiple outfits?
  • Do I have the right coverups?
  • Are my shoe styles matching current pant silhouettes?

Make a list of what you actually need. This is what I did when styling clients—we identified the gaps that, when filled, would multiply their outfit options exponentially.

3. Invest in Quality Staples

Stop shopping the sale racks buying things you’ll wear once or twice. Start investing in quality staple pieces you can build on.

What makes a quality piece:

  • Fabrics that feel good against your skin
  • No itching, tightness, or restriction of movement
  • Proper fit (or worth altering)
  • Timeless style that won’t look dated next season
  • Can be worn multiple ways with different pieces

If you’re on a budget, shop resale or thrift stores for higher-quality brands. Learn which brands fit your body type well, then hunt for those at budget-friendly secondhand shops.

4. Buy Clothes That Actually Fit

This is crucial. Most clothes off the rack don’t fit perfectly, but you can learn which silhouettes work for your body type.

If you find quality pieces you love but they need minor adjustments, invest in a good alterations person. (Pro tip: Nordstrom offers free tailoring on purchases—a great benefit despite higher prices!)

When something fits properly, you’ll feel it. You’ll move with confidence. You’ll stop tugging and adjusting throughout the day.

5. Strategic Trendy Pieces

Pick up just a few trendy pieces each season from affordable stores like H&M, Forever 21, Walmart, Ross, or TJ Maxx. These keep your wardrobe fresh without breaking the bank.

Focus your budget on those quality foundational pieces that will last. Use trendy items as fun accents.

My Current Go-To Discovery

Right now, I’m heavier than I’d like to be (dealing with a pre-diabetic diagnosis, so this is about health, not vanity). My favorite wardrobe discovery? Built-in cami bras. They smooth everything out, eliminate back fat concerns, and give me a more polished look instantly.

This isn’t about hating my body—it’s about finding what makes me feel like the best representation of who I am right now, in this season.

The Spiritual Foundation: What You Really Need

Out of everything (all the wardrobe tips, all the healing work, all the strategies) here’s what we truly need as our foundation:

Faith

Stepping into the unknown and unseen, trusting that you’re in God’s will. You can’t do this on your own strength. Faith means moving forward even when you don’t know what’s ahead, because you know you’re held.

Hope

Understanding that you are secure in Jesus. Your life isn’t just here on earth—it’s in the heavenly realms. This eternal perspective changes everything about how you approach your daily struggles.

Love

Accessing who God is and allowing Him to flow through you to others. Loving who God created you to be—including those strong legs I spent decades being ashamed of. Every part of you has purpose.

The Path to Feeling Worthy and Enough

Here’s your roadmap:

1. Get Clear on Where You Are

Be brutally honest. Your life right now is evidence of what you believe about yourself. Look at your relationships, finances, emotional state, career—what is this evidence telling you?

If you’re struggling financially, there’s something to explore there. The evidence around you reflects your current beliefs and decisions.

2. Identify Where You Want to Be

Create contrast. Measure the gap between where you are and where you want to be. This clarity helps you make aligned choices that move you forward.

3. Step Out in Faith

Here’s a hard truth: If you are comfortable, you are not in God’s will for your life.

We think if we’re in God’s will, things should be easy, protected, peaceful. But actually, God always calls us into deeper waters. There should be some pressure, some discomfort, because that’s where growth happens.

This doesn’t mean being terrified—when you’re connected to God, you feel held even in the uncomfortable. But if life has been super easy and comfortable? That’s a warning that you might be living in your own plans rather than His.

Living on Purpose: Your True Source of Worthiness

You are born like a seed. A flower seed only has DNA for becoming that specific flower. A vegetable seed can only become that vegetable. You’re similar—God knitted you together with specific DNA, experiences, circumstances, and timing, all preparing you for a particular purpose.

Serving others is what God wants for us. Living on purpose is when you’ll truly feel worthy.

When you’re aligned with what you were created to do, when you’re walking in your God-given purpose, everything shifts. You feel confident. You feel held. The fruit of the Spirit flows naturally because you’re in the stream of God’s will.

If you don’t know your purpose yet, that’s okay. This is a journey. Download my personal growth guide (link in the show notes) as a starting point. Or email me at inspiringyourshine@gmail.com with “I need help finding my purpose” in the subject line.

Your Next Steps

  1. Do the closet purge – Get honest about what serves you and what’s just clutter
  2. Curate intentionally – Make your list of what’s missing
  3. Invest in quality – Stop buying cheap pieces that don’t make you feel good
  4. Assess where you are spiritually – What does the evidence of your life tell you about your beliefs?
  5. Step out in faith – Choose one area where you’ll stop playing it safe

Remember: Your worthiness isn’t earned through the perfect wardrobe or the perfect body. You are already worthy. You are already enough.

But living aligned with your purpose? That’s when you’ll feel it in every fiber of your being.
